Do websites offering free PDF editing or similar functionalities store users' files on their servers for a specified amount of time before deleting them? Has any site ever used them for unlawful activities?

The uploading process and the file-type support are things I think you know already, so we don't have to get into that. In matters of copyright and related legal issues.- (1) In general law, the uploading part will be construed as an act of reproduction, publication and distribution, or tantamount to such an act. So bear this generality in mind. (2) If you are the creator or author of the ebook, the copyright already subsists with you, so no problem for you to upload. (3) If you are not the creator or author, and if you haven't obtained prior permission from the publisher or copyright owner, then the uploading and the uploaded file itself will be construed as a breaching act. In other words, you would be in breach of (a) the work's general copyright and (b) the foreign-language rights (if applicable) and (c) the reproduction and republishing rights, and (d) any other reserved rights. (4) However, if you are uploading to (say) your own private online storage entity AND that online storage is accessible privately by only you, then you may have a case that the files are for your own private use. Point (4) being said, the fact that your actual act (either downloaded illegal files or illegally downloaded files) also kind of makes three or all four points rather moot. You're already in breach of some law somewhere by the very act of illegal downloading files. That's the legality of the situation. Not saying I'm condoning it, but lots of people already do what you propose -- and many haven't been caught, which I think it's more a matter of luck than anything else.
